Amaka Calma Tulum Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Amaka Calma Tulum, you immediately feel that laid-back Tulum energy — but with a polished edge that sets it apart from the typical beachside hostels. This four-star boutique property sits in La Veleta, which honestly is one of the better neighborhoods if you want to experience Tulum without the chaos of the main strip. The design feels authentically Mexican without trying too hard, and there’s this calm vibe that makes you want to slow down the moment you arrive. The attention to detail throughout the property reflects a commitment to creating a welcoming atmosphere for every guest.
Location & Neighborhood
La Veleta is where locals actually live, so you’re getting a more genuine slice of Tulum life here. You’re about a 10-minute bike ride to the beach (and trust me, you’ll want to rent a bike), but what I love is that you can walk to some really good local spots for dinner. The cenotes are easily accessible from here too — Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are both doable day trips. There’s parking available right at the hotel, which is actually a big deal since finding a spot near the beach zone can be a nightmare. The neighborhood offers an authentic experience that many visitors seek when choosing their Tulum accommodation.
The Room Experience
The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of comfort and local character — think clean lines, natural materials, and those little touches that remind you you’re in Mexico. The air conditioning works well (crucial in Tulum’s humidity), and the beds are genuinely comfortable. What struck me most was how quiet it gets at night; La Veleta doesn’t have the party noise that can keep you up in other parts of town. The bathrooms are spacious with good water pressure, which you don’t always get in this area. Each detail has been thoughtfully considered for guest comfort.
Breakfast & Daily Rhythms
The continental breakfast hits the spot without being fancy — fresh fruit, good coffee, and enough variety to fuel your cenote adventures or beach days. I actually appreciated that it wasn’t an overwhelming buffet; sometimes simple works better when you’re planning to eat your way through Tulum’s incredible food scene anyway. The restaurant area has this open-air feel that captures those perfect Tulum mornings when the temperature is just right. The morning experience sets a positive tone for your entire day at the property.
Why Guests Love It
Couples really seem to gravitate toward this place, and I can see why — it’s intimate without being stuffy, and romantic without the over-the-top resort vibe. You’re close enough to everything that matters but far enough from the crowds to actually relax. The staff genuinely cares about your experience, offering solid recommendations for cenotes and restaurants that aren’t just the obvious tourist spots. It’s the kind of place where you can have both adventure and downtime, which is honestly what makes a Tulum trip memorable. The balance between accessibility and tranquility makes this property stand out in the region.

Nice little hotel in quiet area, spacious room
Heather from Canada (7/10)
The pool is wonderful, and the location is very good for relaxing and has access to some good places to eat. We had a rooftop terrace with a plunge pool and that was a lovely place to hang out in the evening. We had stayed here in 2022 and enjoyed the stay very much. Since then, it feels as if the hotel has declined a bit.

The hotel was very well maintained and had a great aesthetic. The lobby and pool area were very nice. Our room was nice, comfortable, clean and spacious and had an air conditioner that worked very very well. There was no noise from other guests or from outside.
